Understanding Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland occurring as men age. While not life-threatening, BPH significantly interferes with your comfort and daily routine by disrupting normal urinary flow and bladder function.

How an Enlarging Prostate Causes Symptoms

The prostate sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra—the tube that drains urine. The difficulty you experience with urination is caused by two main factors:

  1. Mechanical Compression: As the prostate grows (the static component), it compresses the urethra, physically making urine flow more difficult.

  2. Increased Tone/Stiffness: The smooth muscle within the prostate tissue often becomes stiffer or hypertonic (the dynamic component). This increased muscular stiffness further tightens the urethra, significantly adding to the difficulty in emptying the bladder.

Prostate Growth Over Time:

This steady, relentless growth of the gland is what leads to the progressive urinary difficulties commonly experienced by men after age 50.

Advanced Therapies for Intermediate to Large Prostates

Aquablation® Therapy

This next-generation robotic therapy uses a heat-free, high-pressure waterjet. I personally guide this therapy, utilizing real-time ultrasound and mapping to remove obstructive prostate tissue with custom precision.

Advanced Therapies for Intermediate to Large Prostates

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)

I carefully recommend PAE as a non-surgical option. It is performed by our expert interventional radiologist who uses a catheter to block targeted arteries feeding the prostate, causing the gland to shrink over time.

Robotic Surgery for Large to Extra-Large Prostates

Robotic Simple Prostatectomy

For extra-large prostates (> 100 cc), Robotic Simple Prostatectomy (RASP) provides the most definitive and durable relief

My experience in robotic surgery dates back to 2002, giving me unmatched expertise in performing RASP to ensure the most complete removal of obstructive tissue.

We offer the full spectrum of modern options—from UroLift (small glands) to AquaBlation (intermediate/large) to RASP (very large)—to ensure your plan is precisely tailored for optimal, lasting relief and safety.

Aquablation is a newer robotic therapy that uses a heat-free waterjet to remove prostate tissue, minimizing side effects compared with traditional TURP. It offers precise, consistent results for prostates of varying sizes while preserving sexual function in most patients.

Yes. Treatment is possible without traditional major surgery. We offer several effective, highly minimally invasive options such as Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE), which is non-surgical, and UroLift, which is an in-office procedure. I will discuss these solutions—along with lifestyle changes—during your consultation.

Most patients are discharged the next day and can expect recovery within 2–3 weeks. Robotic techniques significantly reduce pain, blood loss, and hospital stay compared with older open surgery, providing the most complete and durable long-term results.
