UroLift®: A Revolutionary Leap Forward for BPH Treatment
For years, men suffering from an enlarged prostate (BPH) faced a difficult choice: live with the frustrating urinary symptoms, manage the daily hassle and side effects of medication, or undergo a more invasive surgery. The UroLift® System shatters this compromise. It is a revolutionary, minimally invasive approach that provides rapid, lasting relief from BPH symptoms without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.
Dr. Richard Bevan-Thomas proudly offers this groundbreaking technology to his patients in the Arlington and DFW communities. Having performed the UroLift System procedure for 10 years, he has continually refined his technique to ensure he achieves the best possible results for every patient.
Our Process
How Does the UroLift® System Work?
The beauty of the UroLift System is its simplicity and elegance. The goal is to simply move the obstructive prostate tissue out of the way.
Think of it like tying back a curtain to open a window. Instead of cutting the curtain, you just pull it open to let the light in.
During a brief procedure, Dr. Bevan-Thomas uses a special delivery device to place tiny, permanent implants. These implants act like “tie-backs” to lift and hold the enlarged prostate lobes apart, opening the channel so urine can flow freely again. There is no cutting, no heating, and no removal of tissue.

Are You a Good Candidate for UroLift?
The UroLift System is an excellent option for many men with BPH. You may be an ideal candidate if:
You have a smaller prostate gland (ideally less than 40 grams), where the success rate for this procedure is much higher.
You are seeking a solution that avoids major surgery.
You are unhappy with the side effects or inconvenience of BPH medications.
You want a BPH treatment that has been proven to preserve sexual function.
Dr. Bevan-Thomas will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if your specific prostate anatomy is right for UroLift.
The UroLift Advantage: Proven, Lasting Results
The UroLift System isn’t just a new idea; it’s a globally recognized treatment backed by extensive clinical data and real-world results.
- High Success & Satisfaction: Large clinical studies have demonstrated that over 80% of patients are satisfied with their results and would recommend the procedure to a friend.
- Rapid Symptom Relief: Most men experience a significant improvement in their urinary symptoms, less urgency, stronger flow, and fewer nighttime trips to the bathroom, in as little as two weeks.
- Preservation of Sexual Function: This is a key advantage. The UroLift System is one of the only BPH treatments proven to not cause new, sustained instances of erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction.
- Durable, Long-Term Relief: UroLift is designed to be a permanent solution. The implants are intended to last for the rest of your life, providing years of freedom from BPH symptoms.
The Procedure: A Quick and Comfortable Experience
To ensure maximum comfort and precision, Dr. Bevan-Thomas performs the UroLift System procedure at our state-of-the-art surgery center.
The procedure is done while you are comfortably under anesthesia to minimize any discomfort. It is remarkably quick, typically taking only about 10 minutes to complete. You will be able to go home the same day to begin your recovery.

A Step-by-Step Look at the Procedure
While you are comfortably under anesthesia, Dr. Bevan-Thomas performs a series of precise steps to deploy the UroLift implants:
- Step 1: Visualization
A standard cystoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is passed through the urethra to provide a clear, real-time view of the enlarged prostate lobes that are causing the blockage. - Step 2: Deploying the UroLift® Device
The specialized UroLift Delivery Device, which holds the tiny implants, is passed through the cystoscope to the site of the obstruction. - Step 3: Placing the Implants
With a clear view, Dr. Bevan-Thomas uses the delivery device to gently press the enlarged prostate lobe to the side, like opening a curtain. He then deploys a small implant that permanently anchors the tissue in this new, open position.
Step 4: Creating an Open Channel
This process is typically repeated 4 to 6 times to hold back the tissue on both sides, creating a wide-open channel for urine to flow freely.

Frequently Asked Questions About the UroLift® System
This is one of the most significant advantages of the UroLift System. The vast majority of patients do not require a catheter after the procedure. You can go home and urinate on your own right away, avoiding the discomfort and inconvenience that comes with catheterization.
Because the procedure is performed under anesthesia, you will not feel anything during the brief 10-minute treatment. Afterward, it is common to experience some temporary urinary discomfort, an increased sense of urgency, or see some light blood in your urine. These symptoms are typically mild and resolve on their own. To ensure a smooth healing process, Dr. Bevan-Thomas recommends patients refrain from strenuous workouts or other strenuous activities for one week. Most men are back to their normal daily routines after that, with no restrictions at all after 7 to 10 days.

The key difference is that UroLift is a mechanical solution, not a destructive one. It does not involve cutting, heating (laser), or removing prostate tissue. By simply holding the lobes of the prostate open, like a curtain tie-back, it is one of the only BPH treatments proven to not cause new, sustained sexual side effects.
This is an excellent question. No, having a UroLift procedure does not prevent you from having other BPH procedures like Aquablation, PAE, or a robotic prostatectomy at a later date if they ever become necessary. Because UroLift does not involve cutting or heating tissue, it "doesn't burn any bridges," keeping all of your future options open.
